Anna MehrerGalapagos Islands 2015
So, how did I get here? I have my BA from Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. As a German major and Art and Philosophy minor, I headed to Chicago after graduation and began a 12-year journey into the corporate world. Working for Fortune 500 companies gave me insight into how large organizations work. I took with me many valuable lessons, met some very cool people, but wanted to explore another way of making a living.

Transitioning out of the corporate world in 2008, I began working at a local consignment shop where I fell in love with retail resale. Meeting several different personalities – in the clothes and the people! – offered a continuously stimulating environment. I eventually approached the owner, "You know, there's this thing called MySpace. We should put photos out there." Being an entrepreneur and not afraid to try new things to market her business, she agreed. Facebook eventually supplanted MySpace, and we integrated other social media platforms. Then I started doing her email marketing. Then her brand-new Wordpress e-commerce website. Other business owners asked who did her marketing, so I was referred to other consignment stores in the Portland area. Did I mention my Grandfather was an auctioneer, realtor, and appraiser? I think the love for antiques, resale, and second-hand treasure hunts is genetic! I am a long-time avid user of online marketplaces including eBay, Poshmark, and Vinted.

I am grateful to have learned so much about how small businesses work. I have a profound understanding of how the brunt of responsibilities lies upon the owner, so having someone take care of your marketing and online needs relieves a great amount of time, allowing you to do what you really want to do.

I have also enjoyed working for the Cemetery Association of Oregon since 2016. I have learned much about the death care industry and continue to learn. One of the aspects of the industry that resonates with me is green burial, where the deceased is not embalmed, but buried in a biodegradable container. To that extent, I am a "Friend" of the Green Burial Council. Please take a look at what they're doing to treat the deceased in an ecologically sound, earth-friendly manner.

I have called Portland, Oregon, “home” since 1999. In February 2012, I received my Certificate in Digital Marketing Strategies from Portland State University and completed the Search Engine Marketing module at PSU in March 2015. I am a current member of SEMPDX. My other interests include photography, travel, butterscotch pie, designing jewelry, voice over acting and anything else I have time left over to explore. Oh and I speak fluent German. See my blog to read about my adventures!
